Two-day training course on occupational safety for journalists concluded in Aden

Aden, 2 November 2023- Within the framework of the agreement and cooperation with UNESCO and the International Federation of Journalist, the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate organized a two-days training course on professional safety for journalists during wartime, in Aden. The training coincided with the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, an occasion that falls at a time when journalists are still imprisoned, tortured, abused and killed in Yemen.

Twenty-five male and female journalists from various media outlets, as well as students of the Faculty of Mass Communication at the University of Aden, enhanced their theoretical and applied knowledge on planning media missions, recognizing dangers during disturbances and riots, types of firearms, and awareness of kidnapping operations. The participants also learned the best practices for addressing wounds, injuries, fractures and burns, as well as explored the basics of digital and personal security in the media.

Mahmoud Thabet, head of the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate Aden branch, stated “The course aimed to provide participants with professional skills to enhance professional safety procedures for journalists in their field of work.” He called on the participants to benefit from the course outcomes and apply what they learned in their upcoming media tasks.

In alignment with this initiative, the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate in cooperation with UNESCO and the International Federation of Journalist, is planning a series of training courses dedicated to occupational safety. These courses are intended for journalists and media graduates across various governorates in Yemen, to further prepare them for the challenges and demands of the media work in crisis settings.
